9. No. 37

37 High Street Ditchling East Sussex BN6 8SY
Open 11 to 5pm weekends in May including bank holiday Mondays

Jo Watters-Pawlowski, contemporary abstract painter

For her 15th year of Art in Ditchling, Jo will open her beautiful house gallery, No37, in the heart of the village High Street for May Artists Open Houses. Her new oil paintings evoke a feeling of being somewhere and nowhere. She distorts the perspective while remaining open to interpretation to capture the subjective nature of experiencing the landscape of the South Downs and further afield.

In addition to her paintings, Jo will be showing the work of ceramicist Marija Bichan, a Ditchling-based artist who works from the Ugly Barn Pottery Studio at the foot of the South Downs. Both artists have previously collaborated to develop a range of large vessels.  This year, they have turned to porcelain, a whiter, more temperamental clay. This is particularly true when hand-building with it, as it provides the organic movement they envisioned for the work.

They are both inspired by the natural environment around them, reflected in the movement in the clay and the colours and patterns applied using slip (a mixture of clay and stains/oxides) before being glazed and fired to 1260°C.

These ceramics are only for sale at Venue 9 during the Artist’s Open House.
