Philip was born and educated in Sussex. He studied architecture at Brighton Art School (1965-1971). Thereafter his architectural practice was maintained by undertaking perspective commissions, several of which were exhibited at the Royal Academy. This enabled him to be selective with project commissions that he felt were creatively worthwhile with respect to context and place making, accruing seven awards during his years of practice. He has been actively involved in community conservation representing his profession for 12 years at the Conservation Advisory Group (CAG 2000-2012) in the city of Brighton and Hove, including the role of chairman for 3 years. However, in his heart he always wanted the freedom to paint both en plein air and in his studio, that he built attached to his home in Westmeston. His passion is to paint with fluid watercolour a considered composition of the fleeting light that reveals the line, tone and colour of the space, form, pattern and texture of Sussex landscapes and townscapes.
