STUDIO21 is the home and studio of Bernadina Lloyd. This year, she is delighted to be joined by five other artists, collectively showing paintings, drawings, photography, prints, original handmade cards, paper, textiles, sculpture, ceramic vessels & wall pieces, decorative garden pieces, gold & silver jewellery and fascinating unique creatures with more than a hint of edginess.

The artists’ work shows strong resonances in monochrome, Japan, paper, thread and simplicity of line & form. All six artists have extensive and broad-ranging teaching experience. Please see individual details to discuss workshop bookings.

Bernadina Lloyd
Painting, drawings, photography, giclée prints and unique handmade cards.

Bernadina’s work is always rooted in observation, layers of history or the conflict between the natural and manmade, whether that is pure life drawing or abstract painting and collage. Her paintings often reveal elements of a journey or places visited.

The source of her recent work has been the Merrivale stones on Dartmoor, furthering her exploration of landscape, archaeology, maps & stitch and challenging her to produce highly selective, honed images in colour and monochrome, using various materials, oil to charcoal to thread.

Eleanor Burkett
Paper, textiles and 3D

Paper is at the heart of Eleanor’s practice, whether this is making paper, slashing and rolling paper ‘thread’, exploring script & mark making, or weaving and shaping paper into three-dimensional form. Her work is a contemporary response to paper-textile techniques learnt in North East Japan, where she lived for several years.

The concept of indecipherable or secret text occurs frequently in Eleanor’s work, and as she makes paper thread she recalls popular Japanese myths and legends about paper being cut, rubbed into strips and used by spies or lovers to convey hidden messages.

Amanda Sumpter
Sculpture and paintings

Amanda Sumpter is a sculptor whose practice is rooted in an intuitive exploration of form, material, and memory. Through the slow, tactile process of stone carving she creates organic fluid forms that evoke fragility and attachment. The tactile quality of her carvings invites touch, with surfaces that fold and swell, hinting at an energy just beneath the surface.

Elaine Sheppard Bolt
Ceramics

Elaine Sheppard Bolt is a ceramic and mixed media artist based on Ditchling Common, making work steeped in the context of her local surroundings and guided by a playful sense of narrative. Elaine’s current work includes thrown and hand-built vessels and wall pieces in porcelain and stoneware.

Judy Dwyer
Mixed media and textile creatures.

Judy’s animal creations are made from recycled metal and hand-painted velvet. The contrasting materials frequently suggest an ambiguous element, which may contradict the viewer’s first impressions.

Jenny Turtill
Jewellery and garden sculpture

Jenny specialises in cuttlefish casting to create intricate surface textures in silver, bronze and gold, often combined with precious stones. Her garden sculptural pieces in steel and bronze also feature cuttlefish casting and add extra interest to flower beds.
